Yearwoods

My interest in form and light continues with recent studio work. I've been working hard. I know it, because I'm doing a lot of revisions on each painting. Sometimes I'll spend the day wiping out more than I paint. I'm trying out things in order to discover ways of presenting form and light to viewers that get closer to my sensibilities. This winter I'm enjoying the sustained effort of day after day in the studio. Nonetheless, at end of each day there is a feeling of uncertainty; I can just as easily feel that the day's work was a waste as opposed to being excellent.

Venti

It's interesting how something I have looked at in the past, can keep coming back as part of my image making process. My 2007 trip to Italy was a great opportunity to study the trees, especially the tall cypresses and poplars. I love the shapes, ...so sculptural. The color of the sky against the form seemed to set it off in a beautiful way. Looking across farm fields at these stately trees was something that put love in my heart. This painting, created in cold January, is a warm echo of those visions.

Tuju Bella & East Vaudrin

Tuju Bella, 2010, oil/panel, 64" x 42" (click to enlarge)

I will be showing some new paintings at my Bau-Xi Gallery exhibition in June 2010 (Toronto). These two will be in the exhibition. I'm going to try out a few new ideas in this upcoming show. The ideas will relate to composition and the definition of form against space. I'm playing around with contrast and the way my eye sees shape/form/mass against mostly empty space.

I've discovered a new paint application tool that is quite exciting. I won't tell you what it is (trade secret, ha ha) but you'll see the effect in the new works to come.

Dreams So Real

"Fields of Indiana", oil/panel, 17.5" x 50" Click to enlarge

Happy New Year Everybody! It's hard to believe, but this blog is now one year old. I began it as a way of presenting new work and my comments to readers. Thanks for your feedback and encouragement. I really enjoy hearing about what you think, so keep the emails coming.

Over the Christmas vacation I completed some new pieces. Here are two of them. Both are off to Montreal (Gallerie de Bellefeuille) where one has already sold based on an emailed image to a collector, (can you guess which one?)

This year, I plan to introduce some new elements in my paintings. I want to continue working with form and light (all kinds of light). I also want to develop more paintings that include water. I dream about water all the time. It makes sense to bring this element into my visual art.

I've also refined my technical approach to painting. The new techniques allow me to create richer depths and subtle light variations (requires more layers and time to dry but worth the wait).
