Osprey Island

Osprey Island, oil/panel, 20" x 60", (click to enlarge)
I am continuing to refine my approach to painting landscapes with water.  I've been observing lakes and rivers a lot this year;  watching how the water reflects light and shimmers.  I've found that water doesn't remain still - so it's hard to treat it photographically, frozen in time.  I've been trying out ways to present water that echos my own experience of watching it.  This painting is part of that ongoing series of works that attempts to represent in paint what I experience in nature.

Water is mystical.  There is something about it that suggests much more than we see.

This is the final painting for my Bau-Xi Galleries Vancouver show that opens on March 3rd 2012.  The blue in this sky was really hard to mix, but ultimately I found the right combination of hues and got it so that the blue was late afternoon.  That allowed me to set up the tree and hazy background so that the afternoon light raked the tree and brought out the shape and three - D forms.

Just got a call from Concordia U Alumni Magazine.  Looks like they will do a little feature about my recent show in Tennessee at Tanner Hill Gallery.

These are recent pieces that I've just completed at the beginning of December.  I continue to explore rich colour and a play of contrasts.  The light of day and the way it interacts with the landscape remains a subject in my work and I experiment with some very interesting colour mixes to get that sense.  I feel I have got a firm grip on my layering techniques, these paintings are solid.  Both works are headed to Bau-Xi Galleries in Vancouver for a show that opens on March 3rd.  There will be a preview article in Galleries West Magazine that will highlight the show.  Janet Nichol called to interview me last week.
